About WERD Network

WERD Network...
A brief history

WERD Network's Director, Dr Sue Wilson, has developed a wealth of knowledge about literacy, writing and writerly identity development from a range of experiences across her lifetime. She has worked as a primary teacher, an information technology coordinator, a teacher educator and researcher, a management consultant and an educational consultant among other roles spanning more than three decades. She collaborates with literacy experts nationally and internationally, and works regularly with a range of writers who publish different kinds of works such as narratives, academic writing, departmental and organisational documentation. While Sue has specific interests in multimodal, contemporary, social-issues and picturebook texts, she also has great expertise in traditional and linear text development. She received her PhD from Monash University in 2016 for her qualitative study of student experiences during discussions around social-issues picturebooks.

Who we are today

At WERD Network, we value the community of like-minded writers that we have developed. Almost 200 members have benefited from the work we have been doing over the past seven years. Successes range from publishing a collection of short stories in three different languages; being able to craft and share a slam poem to a room of peers, and; meeting a writing deadline after repeated hurdles. Many of our participants speak of how they have worked through issues of perfectionism, avoidance and/or self-doubt.

We are proud of the way that members of our writing community come together, virtually ato celebrate our achievements and support one another through the ups and downs of being an effective writer.

WERD Network has now expanded to employ Facilities Manager, Damien Powell, who ensures that attendees at writing events have all their (non-writerly) needs attended to. If you are peckish, missing home, interested in the gardens and surrounds, need an additional power supply or have any other creature comforts that we could accommodate, Damien is always pleased to find a way to improve your experience!
